What a Jewish Community Can Be

A welcoming and giving reform congregation committed to social justice, on-going learning, vibrant spirituality, diversity and the State of Israel
Yom Rishon, 4 Tishri 5778

Confirmation Class is part of Temple Emanuel's esteemed Religious School and an important part of the continuing education for our 9th & 10th grade students as they move into adulthood.

Participation in confirmation is one of the wonderful privileges and opportunities available to High School students in our Congregation.  The program is dynamic and informal.  Students meet with Rabbi Yael Romer on Wednesday evenings from 6:45PM-8:30PM during the school year, share a relaxed dinner together and engage in dialogue and discussions on subjects that are relevant for young Jewish adults living in the contemporary world and interested in exploring their identity as a Jew for themselves and with their peers.  Rabbi Romer recognizes that our students and their peers have many commitments as High School students therefore the confirmation program is built around participation and there are no homework assignments.

Rabbi Romer draws topics and articles from an English translation of the Israeli newspaper Ha-aretz and shares them with the group for discussion.  Contemporary articles and films also bring topics relevant to our students and their peers for discussion.  Rabbi Romer sees her role as guide and support for our student's peer dialogue and their role as being specifically to highlight the voice of Jewish textual and ethical responses to contemporary issues and concerns.  Rabbi Romer will introduce English translations of relevant Talmudic and halachic texts to create a foundation for the group dialogue.

Our young people who choose Confirmation have an incredible opportunity to strengthen not only their own Jewish identity and their connection to their peer group but also their role and place with their Jewish community.

Our Confirmation program includes an annual Shabbaton Confirmation Trip towards the end of the class year, and is open to all enrolled Confirmation students.  The trip is to Newport, Rhode Island or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on alternative years.

The Confirmation program is completed at the end of the school year with a special honoring Confirmation service as part of the last day of Religious School.  Other dates and the full schedule available on the Confirmation Calendar.

Our Confirmation Program is an extension of our students commitment to ongoing adult Jewish learning.
